(Berlin, Germany - 1.30 a.m. local time)
I stayed awake all night to see the results unfold live on CNN. It was a sweet victory that was crucial for hope and change mongers around the world. I am certainly one of them. Did you see the orange dress of Michelle on stage that night?
As I am writing this blog almost 24 hours later of the primary elections, good old Stevie Wonder,(who was playing live for Obama in Indianapolis) is singing on my jazz radio: “Show him your love” Enough said... the people showed their love. I send this shout out across the Black Atlantic to the vast shores of this troubled American continent. Yes, you can...
I had to call several of my friends here in Germany to discuss this victory. It seems that everyone is excited again in this roller coaster of elections. So far - so good. Interesting to hear the legendary Bill Moyers and Amy Goodman from Democracy Now talk about politics. They were reminding me that actually none of the candidates addresses the real structural issues of American democracy and the government. They suggest that Obama’s rhetoric and slogans have to come up with more specific strategies and political issues if he wants to win against McCain and really change Washington, as he says he will do.
The world would not forgive him - as the first elected black man - if he gets the chance and then blows it by a vague administration that is blocked and challenged by the right wing establishment inside the power structures. I have always discussed this with the people I interviewed three month ago. I still believe the times where one saviour figure can redeem an entire nation are long gone - too biblical. The world is too complex and globalized for redeemers. What I am saying is - its time to bring in the funk and really make some plans how he is gonna change those crazy mf inside the White House. Innit? Cause nobody is gonna applaud prior to the 1st of January 2009. I guess after this spectacle is over, even Obama himself can not hear words like “hope” and “change” any more - must be difficult to repeat oneself again and again for 12 month.
