(Berlin, Germany - 2.30 p.m. local time)
Another final primary built up - filled with suspense and extraordinary tensions. No election has been so unpredictable and exciting in years. As you can read from the notes on this blog, people across the country- maybe world wide- get tired from this war of words. Check out the meet the press interview that Tim Russert did with Obama. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/24452804#24452804
Here is what a friend of mine feels and writes two days ago: “Well - I'm sick of the election. The shit is coming out now. It's all Obama now and Wright. Stupid bullshit. Of course the problem is that Wright speaks the truth, or a version of the truth.
It's still scary. Obama against McCain, a lot of the white boys will go for McCain. And people don't like Hillary. The people don't like Republicans, but they like McCain.
On a personal level, McCain, Hillary, and Obama are all close on a personal level. So it's dangerous. It's not inconceivable that the Republicans will will again. They only need to get close, then they can manipulate the voting machine computers enough to win.
They are also trying to create new rules for voter identification. Of course poor urban people (read blacks) do not have cars or driver's licenses, so these rules work against poor blacks.
Very scary...Of course with my cynicism, I don't believe in much change. Obama supporters want him to fix things so we can continue our lifestyle without sacrifice. Things don't look too stable anywhere right now.”
Another comment that I found under the name: DEMS WANT OBAMA OUT. Seems like to be paid for the Clinton campaign and is part of an utterly islamophobic and paranoid Anti-Obama website, which reflects what the growing sentiment of the other half of white middle class Americans. Here is what they think:
“Obama is now declaring himself shocked and disappointed at Wright's unrepentantly racist and anti-American views?
Obamas obviously support his feelings of anti-America and white hatred that the church endorses to stay for 20 years and raise young daughters in that atmosphere Obama can no longer plausibly claim innocence in this matter, because he is the one who has encouraged Wright by trying to excuse and explain his views.
All of this is why it is no use for Obama to backpedal from his association with Reverend Wright, or to denounce him now, six weeks too late. It was Obama who sought to provide the Reverend Wright with immunity from criticism--and he can't complain when the reverend tries to take full advantage of that immunity.
This is the final collapse of the noble promise of the Obama campaign. The man who had once put himself forward as the candidate who would transcend racial politics once and for all has ended up legitimizing a Christian equivalent of Louis Farrakhan--and injecting him into the American political debate.”
This all sums up the deep confusion and paranoia that is stirred up by the Jeremiah controversy. But if questions of race, class and identity during this election are openly debated it’s certainly taking place on blogs, media channels and print in a collective effort to chase out the mighty ghosts of amnesia. A wrong sense of patriotism brings memories of the inquisition and plays again on peoples fears and can not be won with heresy arguments. If America would be the only place on earth, where an individual like Obama could be elected president then there is a price to be paid in full. A giant battle to be won for future generations...
And Caroline Kennedy writes:
My father called on Americans to ask what they could do for their country. Those who answered his call built a movement that transformed our country and brought out the best in our national character.
Barack Obama has followed in that tradition -- dedicating himself to public service as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago and then as a state and U.S. Senator.
Now, Barack is calling on a new generation of leaders to get involved and help transform this country.
The Obama Organizing Fellowship is designed not just to help win this election, but to strengthen our democracy by training dedicated volunteers in communities across the country.
Answer the call. Ask what you can do -- for this movement, for our democracy, and for this country. Apply to be an Obama Organizing Fellow today: http://my.barackobama.com/fellows
Fellows will participate in an intensive and rewarding training program focused on the basic organizing principles at the heart of Barack's campaign. Then, in June, they will be assigned to a community where they will receive a minimum of six weeks of real world organizing experience that will have a concrete impact on this election.
Organizing is about more than winning votes. It's an opportunity to help people realize the power they have to change their communities, and this country, from the bottom up.
Barack's experience on the South Side of Chicago transformed his life, and he wants to share that experience with you. The application deadline is Thursday, May 15th, so apply now to be an Obama Organizing Fellow: http://my.barackobama.com/page/s/fellowsapp
